#11 BEACH MUSIC: A time of tans, blonds and hot pants

Image
IT WAS A TIME OF TANS, BLONDS AND HOT PANTS, WHEN THE ENDLESS SUMMER WAS JUST A SHORT WALK DOWN A HOT SIDEWALK
Beach Music, an On the Street Where I Livestories is really a tale of two cities; San Juan, Puerto Rico and Santa Monica, California. It was originally published in the LA Times Sunday Magazine.

Beach Music We came to California from Canada, with a detour to Puerto Rico that lasted one endless summer of a year. A year in which I turned 15, and my hair turned blond from living in the sun. “Psst,” the boys and men would call after me in the blue-cobbled streets of San Juan. “Psst! Hey, blondie. Psst! Hey, cutie pie.” I was devastated when my parents said we had to go, that it was time to leave the island so that my older brother, Russell, could get a first rate education. The plan was to drive cross country from Miami and settle in San Francisco so that my brother could finish high school before going on to UC Berkeley. But, once we got there in the fall of 1968, we found that …

On the street where I live

"I've lived so many places in my life and times... I've sung a lot of songs, I've- " Leon Russell

... I've lost count of how many places I've lived in ....

Three continents, six countries, over a dozen cities and well over thirty houses, apartments, condos and town-homes and a couple of summer sublets.

I blame my parents for the first twenty years worth, the places numbered 1 through 15; from then on ... well, I inherited their very bad case of itchy feet. Looking at the road map of places I've been I may never figure out why my life's journey took this particular route, full of false starts and detours but what I'll try to do here is tell a story set in each locale. I'm beginning with some dusty old pieces which have been sitting here in the archives for ages. I'm gathering the guts to try some new stuff as well. Below is a numbered list of all the streets where I've lived; my intent is to add links as I post my tales, until there's at least one piece for each street.

Not everything will fit my plan, there will be work that's out of order in my little numerical scheme and there may be places I can never find my way back to. I hope that sharing some of these stories with you, I'll be able to figure out mine. If I can just stay still long enough.

You might want to start off with #3, Tripoli, Libya "The Arab boy who took out his eye" since it gets things started. Or Have Broom Will Travel, both are set, at least initially, in Libya. But pick and choose as you like; I'm just grateful that you're here.

"There are places I remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I've loved them all"

  1. I looked over the places you lived. Very Cool indeed. I grew up in Scarborough, Ontario on Kingston road. Eglinton Avenue however, runs east and west through Scarborough it meets up with Kingston road in the east!

    1. Hi Lucia; thanks for stopping by. I've just recently decided to pay this site more attention; while I've been busy on my book-to-movie site, these particular writing muscles have been atrophying so I appreciate the encouragement.
